ABOUT ME

Meet Alan Archibald - Online Psychodynamic Psychotherapist

Alan Archibald

Hi, I'm Alan

My path to psychotherapy wasn't a straight line. I began in the NHS in 1996 as a mental health nurse, and over the next 24 years I worked across some of the most demanding clinical environments in London — inpatient wards, community teams, crisis and A&E services, and secure settings. I became a Matron in Hammersmith and Fulham, managing busy acute mental health units while continuing to work directly with patients who were often in the most difficult moments of their lives.

Throughout that time, I kept returning to the same feeling: that medication and short-term interventions weren't enough. People needed something deeper — space to be truly heard, and time to understand what was actually happening for them beneath the surface.

In 2012, while still working full-time as a Matron, I began training at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust — one of the world's leading centres for psychoanalytic thought. I completed my Postgraduate Diploma in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy in 2014, then continued into the D59I Intercultural Psychodynamic Psychotherapy programme, qualifying in 2017. I funded and attended this training in my own time, working extra hours to make it possible.

At a turning point in 2017, I was offered three different roles. Two would have taken me further into management. One was a clinical post as a Nurse Specialist in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust itself. I chose the Tavistock — because people, not systems, are where I've always wanted to be.

I worked there for four years as a qualified psychotherapist within the NHS, gaining experience in trauma, complex grief, group psychotherapy, risk management, and long-term depth work. In 2020 I moved into private practice, which is where I am now.

I've also been in my own personal therapy throughout my career — something I consider not optional but essential. It keeps me honest, grounded, and genuinely present for the people I work with.

Struggling with emotional pain, trauma, or grief?

I offer a safe, experienced space to begin your healing.

A peaceful scene to relax

I’m a qualified psychodynamic psychotherapist offering online therapy across the UK, with a specialist focus on trauma, grief, loss, and depth psychotherapy. I also have a strong interest and experience in intercultural psychotherapy, supporting individuals from diverse cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds as they navigate identity, belonging, and emotional pain.

With clinical experience in the NHS and advanced training at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust, I work with issues such as miscarriage, stillbirth, childhood trauma, sexual abuse, and long-term emotional struggles. I provide a compassionate, confidential, and professional therapeutic space where we can explore the deeper roots of your difficulties.

My Approach

A Safe, Reflective Space

The therapy I give (psychodynamic psychotherapy) provides a safe space that we can explore and think together about the issues and challenges you bring.

Rooted in Tradition and Evidence

It is evidence-based and with a long tradition of success.
I believe it provides long-term sustainable change in people's mental health.

Unhurried, Compassionate Exploration

It allows for unhurried exploration to really get to the bottom of what’s been going on and provide you with the understanding that is often needed to be able to identify, grieve, and move on from the pain that you have gone through.

Carrying the Weight Together

I will think with you and together hold the weight that you carry. We can then unpack, with care and attention, the difficulties you have faced and try to make sense of it together.

Understanding the Roots

Often patterns set in your early life can have an impact on how you feel now and how you see what goes on around you. I will be able to help you look at these things in a non-judgmental and safe space that allows you to find some peace and resolution.

My Professional Journey

I started as a mental health care professional in the NHS in 1996.

I worked and trained there until I started my private practice in 2020.

While working in the NHS I gained vast experience and knowledge of mental health and wellbeing.
